Dangal is a cult Bollywood film starring Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra in the lead roles. Released in 2016, Dangal is based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat, who are medal-winning female wrestlers from India. The child artistes who play the role of Geeta and Babita are Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar while Mahavir Singh Phogat's wife has been played by actress Sakshi Tanwar.
This incredible story is on the life of the man who dreamt of winning gold medal in wrestling for the country. He wants to have a son to fulfill his dreams but has four daughters instead with his wife. He is disappointed but soon maks up his mind to train his girls to become wrestling champions and bring home a gold medal for the country. He is especially sure his older daughter Geeta Phogat will do it.
Dangal is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Disney India. The music of Dangal is composed by Pritam and the lyrics are by Amit Bhattacharya. There is drama, humour, a mix of every emotion and a touching father-daughter story in Dangal, and a superb sporting climax.
Aamir Khan underwent a major body transformation for Dangal in order to portray both the younger and older versions of Mahavir Singh Phogat. It is Kripa Shankar Bishnoi who trained lead actor Aamir Khan and the entire cast of Dangal for the real-life wrestling sequences. Dangal was shot in several locations such as Gujjarwal, Narangwal, Kila Raipur, Dango and Leel in Punjab and Haryana.
Dangal released on December 23, 2016, and received a stupendous response from audiences and critics, and even industry insiders termed it the best film ever made in Indian cinema. Dangal is the fifth highest grossing Bollywood film worldwide, with its recent success at the Chinese box office adding to its kitty to bring it to almost Rs 2000 crore (at last count).
