Kamal Hassan is an Indian actor, director, producer, screenwriter, lyricist, and choreographer and is known for his versatile acting as well as all round performances in movies. Hassan has acted in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English movies. He made his debut in acting at the age of four as a child actor in the movie Kalathur Kanamma for which he received the President’s gold medal for his performance. His breakthrough as a lead actor came in 1975 drama Apoorva Raagangal and he made his Bollywood debut with the movie Ek Duje Ke Liye. Hassan is known for his acting and he has been a recipient of several awards and recognition. He has won three National Film Awards and 19 Filmfare Awards and he is the only Indian actor whose 7 films have made entry in Oscars. His role in Nayagan received critical acclaims and it was rated by Time as one of the best films in cinema history. Hassan has been titled Kalaimamani in 1979 and was honoured by Padma Shri in 1990, Padma Bhushan in 2014 and he has also been the recipient of the prestigious French honour Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016.
Born on 7th November 1954 in Paramakudi, Madras, he was born in a Tamil family and was born to D Srinivasan and Rajalakshmi. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a housewife. Hassan had two elder brothers Charuhasan and Chandrahasan and an elder sister Nalini. He was the youngest in the family and was born as Parthasarathy. He received his primary education in Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram district and later he moved to Madras to complete his higher studies. He was interested in acting and arts since childhood and when a physician friend of Hassan's mother visited Avichi Meiyappa Chettiar (AVM) to treat his wife, she brought Haasan with her. Apparently impressed by Hassan's demeanor Suresh Madhavan, M Saravanan (AVM's son) recommended him for their upcoming production Kalathur Kannamma. He then made his debut in acting at the age of four as a child actor in the movie Kalathur Kanamma for which he received the President’s gold medal for his performance. He later also starred as a child artist in five more movies and he was associated with theatre groups as well. Hassan then started to concentrate in his studies and after the completion of his studies; he returned to films after seven years and started his career playing few supporting roles. He played the role of supporting actors in movies like Maanavan, Annai Velankani and Arangetram. His first serious role was in the 1974 release Aval Oru Thodar Kathai. He won his first regional Filmfare Award for 1975 release Malayalam movie Kanyakumari. He then acted in Tamil movie titled Apoorva Raagangal and the movie won the National Film Award for Best Tamil feature film. For his role in the movie, he also won the first Filmfare Award in Tamil. He then started to feature in many regional movies and was later seen in movies like Manmadha Leelai, Idi Katha Kaadu, Bengali film Kabita, Sigappu Rojakkai and Sommokadidhi Sokkadidhi. He made his Bollywood debut with the movie Ek Duje Ke Liye and was later seen in movies like Sadma, Yeh To Kamaal Ho Gaya and Zara Si Zindagi. In 1984, he was seen in Saagar and won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his role. He was then seen in Bollywood movies like Geraftaar and Dekha Pyaar Tumhara after which he started to focus in South Indian film industry. He was then seen in movies like Punnagai Mannan, Kadhal Parisu and Nayakan. For his performance in Nayakan, he received his second National Award. He then appeared in the only silent film till date titled Pushpak and was later seen in Unnai Mudiyum Thambi, Sathya and Chanakyan. Haasan then started experimenting in comedy genre and was seen in movies lke Gunaa and Thevar Magan. Later he was seen in many comedy movies like Singaravelan, Maharasan, Kalaignan and Sathi Leelavathi. Known for his versatile acting, he also played the role of a woman in the comedy Avvai Shanmughi and later also played the role of a woman in Chachi 420. Hassan then started to spend some time in direction and after directing Chachi 420, he later directed his second film Hey Ram, a period drama. In 2004, he appeared in Vasool Raja MBBS, a remake of Munnabhai MBBS and later he wrote and starred in comedy movie Mumbai Express. Later, he produced and starred in Unnaipol Oruvan, a remake of the movie A Wednesday. In 2013, his next release was Vishwaroopam and the movie won two National Film Awards. Later in 2015, Uttama Villain was released. Papanasam, a Tamil remake of Malayalam film Drishyam was released in July 2015 and it gained critical acclamations as well as commercial success.
Hassan in 1978 married to Vani Ganapathy and he got divorced ten years later. Then he married Sarika Thakur in 1988 and then they gave birth to their first child Shruti Hassan and later to Akshara. The couple got separated in 2004. Hassan also has his own production company titled Rajkamal International and the company has produced several of his movies.
