A mountain pass refers to a route through a mountain range or over a ridge. While at lower elevations, passes are called hill passes, on higher altitudes, they are called mountain passes. Given to India’s varied terrains, it is home to a number of high altitude passes. As it has mountain ranges in abundance, passes are important to overcome the hurdle of commuting from one place to another. Baralacha la also known as Bara-lacha Pass is a high mountain pass in Zanskar range. It connects Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Sela Pass is located in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. At an elevation of 13,700 feet, it connects the Buddhist city of Tawang Town to Tezpur and Guwahati.
Chang La is a pass in Ladakh. It is the world’s third highest motorable road.
Rohtang Pass is situated on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km from Manali. It connects the Kullu valley with Lahaul and Spiti valleys.
Goecha La is a pass in Sikkim. The southeast face of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain, is viewable from this pass.
Kunzum Pass is located on the eastern Kunzum range of Himalayas. It connects the Kullu Valley and Lahaul Valley with the Spiti Valley.
Tanglang La is another pass in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Khardung La on the Ladakh range is the gateway to Shyok and Nubra valleys.
Karakoram Pass is a mountain pass between India and China.
