Global airline agency AirlineRatings.com has announced its Airline Excellence awards for 2017. The results were based on AirlineRatings’ major international industry and government audits, and other key criteria like fleet age, profitability, and passenger review ratings. In order to feature in the top list, it was important for airlines to achieve a seven-star safety rating and demonstrate leadership in innovation for passenger comfort. Here are the top five airlines in the world as per the AirlineRatings.com’s editors.
1. Air New Zealand
For the fourth consecutive year, Air New Zealand has emerged as the winner for Airline of the year. AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said: “In our objective analysis Air New Zealand came out number one in virtually all of our audit criteria, which is an exceptional performance.” Air New Zealand’s commitment to a young fleet and focus on the environment was commendable leading to its high ratings.
2. Qantas Airways
Winning the award for Best lounges and featuring 2nd on the overall list, Australia’s Qantas got noticed as it produced a stunning financial turnaround in 2016. It is also all set to take delivery of its first Boeing 787s in 2017. With an all-time high customer approval rating and continuous innovations like the lie-flat beds on all its A330s that operate domestic and regional international flights, Qantas has demonstrated excellence.
3. Singapore Airlines
Third on the list was Singapore Airlines which also won the Best Economy award. It has always been at the forefront of the economy class product and with the new premium economy, revamped business class and the new A350 over the last 12 months, it sprung up to the top 5 list.
4. Cathay Pacific Airways
Cathay Pacific is already a celebrity in the Airlineratings.com awards circle having won several awards in the past. It clinched the Best Business Class in 2013 and 2015 and Best Asia/Pacific Airline for 2016. This year, it finished at no. 4 on account of its continuous excellence.
5. Virgin Australia/Virgin Atlantic
Finally, at no. 5 was the Virgin Group with both its airlines – Virgin Australia and Virgin Atlantic – making a mark this year. Virgin Australia’s new business class and transition from a low-cost carrier to a new world airline has been applauded worldwide. On the other hand, Virgin Atlantic has introduced 787s and ordered A350s pointing towards a bright future for the group.
