Christmas 2017 is a little more than ten days away, which means that it is just about time to get ready for the special cakes and desserts and plan a quick getaway for the long weekend coming up. Thankfully, Bangalore is close to a lot of interesting destinations that are especially tempting in the winter months. With three days in hand and pleasant weather all around, where will you be spending your Christmas? Here are some options that can help answer this question. Kudremukh
The hill station of Kudremukh lies in Chikmagalur, and its name translates to ‘horse face’, referring to the shape of its peak that resembles the face of a horse when viewed from a certain angle. But it’s not just this feature that makes Kudremukh famous. The hill station and its surrounding region offers beautiful landscapes of green meadows, dense jungles and waterfalls. The Tunga, Nethravati and Bhadra rivers originate from the region, and the Bhadra Tiger Sanctuary and Kudremukh National Park are a part too. There is also the Kadambi waterfalls and several nature trails to take you through the jungles and riverbeds.
Coorg
This is probably the most famous entry in this list; scenic Coorg and the town of Madikeri are popular tourist destinations for all kinds of demographics. It lies just around 260 km from Bangalore at an altitude of 1,500 meters, and Coorg’s sprawling misty meadows and rocky cliffs have even earned it the nickname ‘Scotland of India’. This is a well-developed tourist hotspot, with plenty of things to see and do. There is the famous Abbey Falls and the ruins of Madikeri Fort, the Nisargadhama garden and Raja’s Seat.
Kemmangundi
Another hill station in Chikmagalur, Kemmangundi is just around 250 km from the city and lies at an altitude of around 1,400 meters. The hill station is part of the Baba Budan range and its name translates to ‘place of red earth’, referring to the red soil that is so famous here. More people know of this place as KR Hills, named after the legendary king of the former Mysore State, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. You’ll find plenty of beautiful flowers here, along with vast coffee and tea plantations and thick bamboo groves.
Gokarna
The beach towns of Gokarna and Murudeshwar, both 75 km apart, are also good options for those drawn by the sand and ocean waves. Gokarna is the more famous among the two, though it has its corners of solitude still. Its ancient temples are also a big draw for pilgrims. Murudeshwar has its share of religious monuments too, including one of the tallest statues of Shiva and a namesake temple dedicated to the god. Shimoga
Located around 300 km from Bangalore, the city of Shimoga has a wildlife sanctuary, bird sanctuary, a place, temples, mountains and much more to explore. Together with the nearby town of Agumbe, Shimoga has enough things going for it to last the entire winter season, although it is most beautiful during the monsoon months, when the region gets the highest amount of rainfall in South India. Shimoga also boasts of the 10th highest waterfall in India, Barkana Falls, and is famous for its incredible natural vistas and historical landmarks.
