Sunday, 18 June is Father’s Day 2017; a day to celebrate the incredible role of fathers. It is a day for children to celebrate and show their love for their dad, and one of the best ways to do that is with a nice vacation. If you are looking to spend some quality time with your father, why not plan a quick and relaxing getaway where you can strengthen your bond and get into your own little adventure. Presented here are ten great holiday destinations for father and son, but these are places that are also ideal for some father-daughter bonding too. Manali right now is seeing peak season, with plenty of tourists and travelers. Nevertheless, if you live somewhere in Delhi, Chandigarh or nearby areas, Manali still makes for an engaging visit. The town has plenty of places hidden away from the crowds if you and your dad prefer to avoid the crowd. But adventure is what the two of you should be doing here. From river rafting along the Beas River or going paragliding at Solang Valley, there is plenty to do here for a father and son duo who loves adventure.

Ranthambore National Park, located in the Sawai Madhopur district of the state, lies among the Vindhya and Aravalli hills and is one of the largest sanctuaries in India. It is also a fantastic place to visit for father-son duos who love wildlife spotting. The animals here are pretty used to being spotted and stared, so there are plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting and photography.  There is also the Ranthambore fort that lies on top of a hill. The ruins of the fort and the dense jungle setting offer a marvelous glimpse into the rich wildlife and biodiversity that is there in India. And while some of the zones shut down in the monsoon, three and sometimes more remain open.

The sacred town of Rishikesh is a tourist’s paradise with thousands arriving here every year. Many come here for spirituality, seeking a higher purpose, while others come for the adventure sports available here, from kayaking and rafting to trekking and even bungee jumping. As such, Rishikesh is a good destination for those who chase both enlightenment and adventure. There is plenty to do on both fronts, which works well if either the father or son is inclined towards different things. Located along the sacred Ganges, Rishikesh has temples and ashrams to visit and mountains and rivers to master.

The small state of Goa is a perennial party destination, but there are lots of places here that are far enough from the parties for a father and son to spend some quality time. If you and your father prefer relaxing holidays, Goa is an ideal destinations. There are dozens of beaches of all kinds where you can bask in the sun and watch the Arabian Sea in silence. Add a nice book to gift to dad for the journey and some drinks to cool down after a day under the sun, and you have everything needed for chilled out father’s day outing. Monsoon is an off-season here too, so you will find fewer crowds to distract you and lower rates.

Sand dunes, barren mountains, stunning greenery and wild flowers: you will find all these vivid landscapes come together in Nubra Valley, which lies around 100 km northeast of the more popular Ladakh valley. Ladakh is, of course, the most frequented valley in the region, but Nubra too gets its fair share of visitors thanks to the stunning scenery you get to see here. You can explore the sand dunes on the back of the Bactrian camels, spend time introspecting at Diskit Monastery, or simply stop by anywhere along the scenic route through Nubra and admire what you see around you.

The famous Athirapally Falls in Kerala will make for an arresting view, now that the monsoon has finally arrived in the state. One of the most beautiful and popular waterfalls in India, Athirapally Falls is a pretty famous weekend getaway if you stay in Coimbatore, Kochi or Munnar. Part of the Chalakudy River and located at the entrance to the Sholayar hills, the waterfalls drop from around 80 feet, crashing onto the rocks below and covering the base with mist. The waterfall is at its strongest in the monsoon, with all the streams coming together to form a wide formation. Reaching here is pretty easy too, and should not be too taxing. The evergreen hill station of Coorg is a good choice for a quick Father’s Day getaway if you stay in Bangalore or somewhere nearby. With plenty of captivating waterfalls and the aroma of coffee from the plantations everywhere, Coorg is a good old-fashioned hill station that will appeal to both father and son. You can spend a few days exploring the coffee plantations and tasting the local cuisine, and enjoying the scenery around you. Visit Madikeri and places like Abbey Falls, Raja’s Seat and Bylakuppe, go trekking to the peaks of Pushpagiri, Brahmagiri or Thandiyandamole, or go on a safari through the Nagarhole National Park, if open.

We come back to Himachal Pradesh again, this time McLeodganj, a few kilometers away from Dharamshala and easy reachable by road, especially if you live in Delhi, Pathankot, Chandigarh or other areas nearby. For Father’s Day, you can explore the famed Tibetan culture and community of McLeodganj, popularly known as Little Lhasa. There are lots of Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan institutes to see here, including Namgyal Monastery, Tsechokling Gompa and Tsuglagkhang. You can pick up Tibetan handicrafts and other items in the shopping center too. And for the more adventurous fathers and sons, McLeodganj is the base for several treks that cover the Dhauladhar, Chamba and Kangra valleys.

The historically rich city of Vijayawada is best visited during the spring, when its delicious mangoes are in season. The place is famous for its sweets and for the largest railway junction in South India. And there are plenty of places for father and son to explore, from the ancient edifices that stand today as a reminder of the legendary Vijayanagra Kingdom to the Undavalli and Mogalarajapuram caves. There is also Kondapalli Fort and Manginapudi Beach, and several other temples and heritage sites. Gandhi Hill, Prakasham Barrage and Hazarat Bal Mosque are other popular places of interest here.

If you and your father prefer someplace less hectic than Coorg or Vijayawada, there is always Agumbe, a small town that is often called the Cherrapunji of South India for the amount of rainfall that it gets. Located in Shimoga district, Agumbe offers plenty of scenic beauty and a wide variety of flora and fauna to discover, including endangered species like the great hornbill and the lion-tailed macaque. The monsoon blesses Agumbe and the region around it with plenty of beautiful waterfalls to explore as well, including Jogigundi, Onake Abbi, Barkana and Kunchikal falls.
