The year 2018 is going to be a good one for travelers in India, with a total of 16 long weekends happening over the course of the year. And the second long weekend of 2018 and first big one of the year is coming up in three days, on the occasion of the Republic Day. You can expect a lot of people in Mumbai and Pune to head out this weekend for a quick getaway. The usual getaways may already be swamped, so this time we’re look at some of the more offbeat destinations near Mumbai to head to for a last-minute Republic Day 2018 long weekend getaway. Maval

Maval lies around 80km from Mumbai and is a great destination for a getaway with friends and family away from the hustle of the city, or for a bit of adventurous trekking. You can trek to the nearby fort, go rafting or kayaking, or just chill around a campfire for a couple of days. Takve Lake in Maval is a nice alternative to the more popular lakeside camping destinations like Pawna.

Another destination located around 80km from Mumbai city, Durshet is a nice destination to spend some days close to nature. The town lies by the banks of the Ambar River and under the majestic Sahyadri hills. It is a good spot for people in both cities, with a few nature trails and trekking routes on offer. The town lies close to the town of Khopoli and was once a strategically important part of the Maratha Empire.

Savarkut

The village of Savarkut lies around 100km from Mumbai, offering a taste of the laid-back village life for a few days. The slow pace is a welcome change from the breakneck speed of Mumbai or nearby Pune. The village lies along the River Vaitarna between Mumbai and Nashik, and it is also a good spot for adventure enthusiasts. There are rafting activities along the river, along with kayaking and waterfall rappelling. You’ll also find a few trekking trails nearby if you ask around.

Jawhar

Silent and beautiful, the hill station of Jawhar lies around 155km from the city and is a great place for friends, families and even solo adventurers. It is the home of the Warli community, who produce the famed Warli paintings. Naturally, the chance to learn more about the culture of this community is a big draw of Jawhar. The place is also close to several waterfalls, ancient temples and fantastic viewpoints that look out the Sahyadris. Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary

Finally, we look at the Dajipur Bison Sanctuary, located at the southern end of the Sahyadri range and around 460km from Mumbai. The journey is long but memorable, with plenty of hairpin bends along the way as you make it up the mountain. The bison sanctuary is so named because of its large population of Indian bisons, but you’ll find many other species too. Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary is also just 30km from Dajipur.
