The north-eastern part of India is one of its most beautiful yet lesser explored regions. Its lush green hills and gushing waterfalls form breathtaking landscapes that stay with you forever. Its pleasant weather and friendly people make you feel welcome and never leave. Of all the northeastern states, one of the most accessible and enjoyable is Meghalaya. Known for its vibrant capital city of Shillong, and two of the wettest places on the planet – Cherrapunji and Mawsynram – Meghalaya is like a dream come true for those who like nature. Meghalaya is best visited during the winter months of November to February. This is when it is ideal for sight-seeing as rain doesn’t play spoil sport and the scorching sun doesn’t take away all your energy. Since northeast India is still not a very touristy locale for most Indian vacationers, you do not have to worry about peak tourist crowds. Whether you are a family vacationer or a solo backpacker, a honeymooner or part of a bachelor group, there will be plenty of you to do in Meghalaya during winter. If you like, you can also take excursions to other states of northeast India during winter. Assam’s Kaziranga National Park is absolutely marvelous during this time. It is also when the Hornbill festival is held in Nagaland. And Arunachal Pradesh, although a bit obscure, has many gems that are at their very best during winter.
The famous Seven Sisters Waterfalls
One advice though – if it is the waterfalls and the rain that you want to check out, you may want to consider a monsoon trip (mid-May to mid-October). However, if you want to be able to move about freely and enjoy all that the state has to offer, your best bet would be the winter months of late-November to February.
