Jog Falls are located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. Four cascades, known as Raja, Rani, Rover and Rocket merge to form the huge waterfall on the Sharavathi River. The falls are locally known as Geruoppe Falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi. Jog itself is a Kannada word, which means falls.

Jog Falls are unique as the water does not stream down the rocks in a tiered fashion; it thunders down the slope losing contact with the rocks, making it the tallest un-tiered waterfall in India. The beauty of the waterfalls is enhanced by the lush green surroundings, which provide a scenic backdrop. Visitors can hike to the base of the falls and take a plunge in the water.

Here, Watkins Platform is a popular point to view the falls. You can also get a scenic view of the falls from the rock outcrop near Bombay Bungalow. The area near the falls is also ideal for trekking. Swarna Nadi riverbank, the Sharavathi valley and the lush green forest around the waterfalls are just as scenic. Other places to visit near the falls are Dabbe falls, Linganamakki Dam, Tunga Anicut Dam, Thyvare Koppa Lion and Tiger reserve and Sharavati River. The best time to visit Jog Falls is during the monsoon.

There are plenty of accommodation options near Jog Falls in Shimoga. The KSTDC Maurya Hotel offers affordable rooms. There is also a dormitory with ten beds. These options are more pocket-friendly as compared to private hotels. It is advisable to book the room in advance especially between August and December since the weather during this time of the year is pleasant.

There are a few restaurants near Jog Falls. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are available at almost every restaurant. Though the restaurant at Maurya hotel is decent, carrying your own food and water is a good option.
