Located on the banks of the Yamuna river in the Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, Paonta Sahib is a revered site for Sikhs. It is believed that after Guru Gobind Singh wrote a major portion of the sacred book, the Dassam Granth here. A large Gurudwara stands here in the memory of Guru Gobind Singh.
The Gurudwara Paonta Sahib holds high religious and historical importance to Sikhs all around the world and its Palki (place where the Guru resides when carried from one place to another), donated by one of the devotees, is made of pure gold. The Shri Talab Asthan, where salaries are distributed and the Shri Dastar Asthan, where turban tying competitions are held are some of the most beautiful places in the shrine. The Gurudwara also has a museum that displays antiques and weapons used by Guru Gobind Singh during his stay in Paonta Sahib. Langar is served for all who wish to partake in it at the Gurudwara.
There are many stories behind how Paonta Sahib was named. It is said that the word Paonta is derived from the hindi word Paon which means foot and the place is named so in reference to the ornament Guru Gobind Singh wore on his foot while bathing in the Yamuna river.
Apart from its religious importance, there are many other activities you can indulge in while in Paonta Sahib. The Assan Lake offers recreational facilities like speed boating, rowing, paddling and sailing that will satisfy the adventure junkie in you. Another tourist attraction is the Sahstradhara, a sulfur water spring, that is aesthetically pleasing and is suitable for picnics. It is believed that its water has medicinal value that can clear all kinds of skin related issues.
While summers can be quite warm, prepare for the worst if you are traveling to Paonta Sahib in the winter.
