Vasant Panchami 2017: Know Puja Muhurat, Puja Vidhi & auspicious timings to celebrate the arrival of spring season with Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami!

Basant Panchami also known as Vasant Panchami, Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami is an auspicious day which is dedicated to the Goddess Saraswati. This is a Hindu festival wherein Saraswati puja coincides with Basant Panchami. Basant Panchami festival is celebrated on the fifth day of Magh (January and February) according to the Gregorian calendar. The word Vasant Panchami is derived from a Hindi word ‘Vasant’ which means spring and Panchami means the fifth day. So, Vasant Panchami festival falls on the fifth day of spring. Vasant Panchami is the festival which marks the end of the winter season. On this day Goddess was born as well as this is the first day of arrival of Spring season. Goddess Saraswati is the Goddess of music, arts, science and technology and she is the Hindu goddess of the Vasant Panchami festival. On this auspicious day, devotees worship goddess to get rid of their sins and also to get enlighten with knowledge. On the day of Vasant Panchami, students worship the deity and their books, pens, and pencils are placed near the goddess and further it is used by the students.

Basant Panchami is mostly celebrated in North India and devotees even prepare lip smacking delicious food. ‘Basant’ name came into origin from yellow color which depicts positive energy and signifies the arrival of spring. On this day, Boondi ladoos, kesar halwa are prepared which is a common offering to the Goddess. Goddess Saraswati is the goddess of wisdom and she is often pictured seated on a lotus or a peacock, wearing a white dress. She has four hands which symbolizes ego, intellect, alertness and the mind. She even carries a lotus and scriptures in her hands and she plays music on the veena.

On  the day of Basant Panchami, various schools and colleges arrange a special puja to seek divine blessings from Goddess Saraswati. There is a traditional ritual of initiating education to children which is known as Akshar-Abhyasam, Vidya-Arambham, Vidya-Praasana. Many people start good work on this auspicious day by taking blessings from the goddess.

Devotees observe rigorous fast on this day to get freed from their sins and attain spiritual peace. Basant Panchami is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Krishna and devotees offer sheera, kesar halwa as a form of prasad. The prasad is cooked with semolina, almonds, raisins, cashews, cardamom powder, nutmeg, saffron and the main key ingredient of this dish is yellow food colour. Yellow color is given lot of importance on this day as it is the color of spring. People wear yellow clothes and further also offer marigold flowers to the goddess.

या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता
या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना।
या ब्रह्माच्युत शंकरप्रभृतिभिर्देवैः सदा वन्दिता
सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा॥

शुक्लां ब्रह्मविचार सार परमामाद्यां जगद्व्यापिनीं
वीणा-पुस्तक-धारिणीमभयदां जाड्यान्धकारापहाम्‌।
हस्ते स्फटिकमालिकां विदधतीं पद्मासने संस्थिताम्‌
