Claude Shannon, Father of information theory, commemorated on his 100th birth anniversary

Claude Shannon’s impact is still felt in contemporary times and Google came out with a fitting tribute on his 100th birth anniversary. Surely one of the most important members in the field of engineering and Mathematics, Shannon gave the world it’s first digital computer and came up circuit design. Shannon, hailing from Michigan was the brains behind so many path-breaking theories and innovations that are used by scientists and mathematicians alike. Shannon was conferred with the noble prize in 1939, aged just 33, and that proved to be the springboard of a gamut of  awards that the American stacked up during his time.

During World War 2, Shannon joined Bell Labs and worked on fire-control systems and cryptography. This led to him joining hands with famous English cryptographer Alan Tuning. From Signal flow graphs to card theory, there were plenty of avenues that Shannon dipped his feet in. He is arguably the greatest Electrical engineer who ever lived. It was Shannon’s versatility that made him stand out. In 1950, he even had a book on Computer Chess published.

Shannon was an atheist and idolised Thomas Alva Edison while  growing up. Turns out that Shannon and Edison were distantly related. While working at Bell labs, he met his wife Betty, with whom he had three children. Shannon is survived by two children, Son, Andrew and daughter, Margarita. His eldest son, Robert died of Alzheimers in 1998. Shannon breathed his last on February 24th 2001. It is widely believed that the seeds of the digital revolution was sown by Shannon.
