Dhanteras – is the first day of Diwali which usually falls one or two days before Lakshmi Puja. The festival is celebrated on 26th October, 2016 and Lakshmi Puja is the main day of Diwali. The word ‘Dhanteras’, as the word ‘Dhan’ literally means wealth and ‘Tera’ comes from 13th. Dhanteras festival is also known as Dhanatrayodashi or Chhoti Diwali. Dhanteras usually falls before Lakshmi Puja which is the main day of Diwali festival.This festival is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and energy. Significance of Dhanteras:

It is said that on the auspicious day of Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi visits homes and grants devotees with her blessings. People also perform Maha Puja for the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha according to the timings of shubh muhurta. The seven cereals are been worshipped at this day including barely, wheat, Urad, gram, Moong and Masoor. Why do people purchase new things on the day of Dhanteras?  Lord Dhanwantri is considered as the Lord of all God’s, who was born on the day of Dhanteras. That’s the major reason why people purchase silver or gold coins which has pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.

Mythological story about Dhanteras:

The mythological story about Dhanteras is all about a 16-year-old son of King Hima whose horoscope predicted his death by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. The whole day his wife didn’t allow him to sleep and laid out all her precious ornaments in a basket and kept it near the entrance with lit lamps all around it. Her wife kept on singing various songs so that her husband doesn’t fall asleep. On the next morning, when God of Death Yama (Yamaraj) arrived at his destination in the form of serpent, his eyes were dazzled with the brightness all over. Yama could not enter his house and in the next morning silently left the place. Hence, the prince got saved with the cleverness of his soulmate and thus this day is celebrated as Dhanteras. According to several legends, Gods and devils churned ocean for Amrita, Dhanvantari – the Gods’ physician – emerged out of it carrying a jar of elixir on the auspicious day.

Dhanteras Celebration:

On Dhanteras, Lakshmi Mata – the Goddess of wealth is been worshipped by the devotees to seek her divine blessings in the form of well-being and prosperity. People celebrate this festival with lot of zeal and enthusiasm. They also lit the lamp, diyas and welcome Goddess Lakshmi into their houses. People design beautiful rangoli’s along with Goddess footprints outside their pathways. This signifies the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees also sing devotional aartis, mantras, slokas or hymns to please Goddess Lakshmi. People also get indulge in playing cards and other lottery games. Naivedya is the traditional form of sweets which is been prepared and offered to Goddess. Dhanteras is a day when business places are beautifully decorated and lamps are lit for the entire night. This festival is a huge one for all Hindus and they celebrate it with lot of enthusiasm.

Dhanteras– How to celebrate it?

Dhanteras is a day when one purchases gold and new clothes and in the evening, lamps are lit and everyone welcomes Goddess Lakshmi into their homes. Ahead of Lakshmi Pujan, females of the household draw rangoli. Devotional songs, aartis are sung and various types of tempting delicacies are prepared. Lord Kuber is also worshipped along with Goddess Lakshmi on the day of Dhanteras who is regarded as the treasurer of wealth. The secret of worshipping both is in the prospect of increasing the benefit of every prayer. Every individual purchases something or the other on the occasion of Dhanteras – it may include jewellery, gold, silver, clothes or utensils according to one’s budget.
