Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on September 5 and is the one of the major festivals celebrated in India.Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav festival was first celebrated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler and since then it is being continued. Ganesh Chaturthi festival lasts for 10 days and ends on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi, which is observed during the month of Bhadra i.e. mid-August or mid-September. The auspicious occasion arrives on the fourth day of Bhadarva Shukla-Paksh according to the Hindu calendar and is mostly celebrated for 10 days as Ganpati, Ganesh Festival or Ganeshotsav. How Ganesha the elephant god was born
There is a myth saying that while his mother Parvati was having a bath, she created a human figure and gave him life. Lord Shiva came back from meditation desired to see his wife but was stopped by him. Lord Shiva in anger cut off Ganesha’s head and later realised that he was Parvati’s son. Since Ganesha’s head could not be rejoined, the head of the first living creature i.e. the elephant was attached to his body. And since then he is known as Ganpati or Ganesha, the foremost god of Hindus. Mostly he is worshipped as the sign of a new beginning. Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler and since then it is being continued. When slowly and steadily the custom started to fade out, freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak brought back the tradition in the form of a 10-day festival. Ganesh Festival is celebrated all over the globe and the first day is also termed as Vinayak Chaturthi. It is the day Lord Ganesha was born. It is mostly observed during the month of Bhadra i.e. mid-August or mid-September and lasts for 10 days ending on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi.
The Ganesh Festival
A clay model of Lord Ganesha is made before arrival of the festival and the idols are easily available in sizes from 3/4th of an inch to 25 feet tall. Lord Ganesha is always placed on high platforms and mantlepieces and nicely decorated for paying homage. On this day, devotees chant mantras and songs related to Ganesha and this ritual is termed to be ‘pranapratishhtha’. There are several ways of paying tribute and prasad or naivaidya in the form of coconut, jaggery and modak are offered to Lord Ganesha.
On these 10 days, Ganesha is worshipped and on the 11th day his procession is accompanied with dancing and then the idol is immersed in flowing water.
