Google doodle celebrates Father of Modern Psychology Sigmund Freud's 160th Birth Anniversary

May 6: Google celebrated the birthday of Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud’s 160th Birth Anniversary with a beautiful doodle. Freud is also considered the father of modern psychology, but is most well known for his work with psychoanalysis. He is also the one of the most known figures in the scientific study of psychology. The doodle commemorated one of the Frued’s most celebrated theories- the iceberg theory.

The doodle incorporates Frued’s face into a visual representation of the theory which shows massive icebergs floating on vast waters. Only part of Freud’s head- his visage- can be seen floating above the surface of the water and the rest of it- the major part- is submerged within water. This is a brilliant representation of his theory which divides the mind into the conscious, preconscious and the unconscious parts. According to the theory, the conscious mind- which constitutes thoughts which preoccupy our attention in the current scenario- is like the tip of the iceberg, which is our mind. Majority of the mind constitutes of the preconscious and the unconscious, which is indicated by the submerged part of the iceberg. The preconscious is all that can be retrieved as memories, while the unconscious- which is the biggest part of the mind- holds the secret to our most natural behaviours and instincts. The unconscious is the abode of those primeval wishes and desrires, which are carefully monitored and kept at bay by the preconscious area of the mind. Freud’s theory stresses on the fact that the unconscious affects a person’s nature and behaviours to the maximum extent.

But Freud’s contributions cannot be limited to just the analysis of the unconscious mind. His works are vast and varied and he has shaped pschotherapy as it is parcticed now. Words and concepts that he introduced have come to be used not just by psychologists, but also in popular literature and in day-to-day lives by people. Some of these include, anal (personality), libido, denial, repression, cathartic, Freudian slip, and neurotic, etc. No wonder he was one of the most influential people of the twentieth century and has left a rich legacy, which continues to inspire works in multiple fields besides psychology, such as art, literature and modern parenting.
