Jahangirpura Ashram fears less turnout on Holi considering the arrest of Asaram

Asaram Bapu

Every year, the ashram surroundings used to be crowded with devotees wanting to see bapu and celebrate holi with him. Holi celebrations were an elaborate affair every year at Jahangirpura Ashram in Surat with around three lakh followers attending it. Huge water pumps filled with colored water were used to be sprayed on devotees to mark the festival. The festival used to be celebrated in all its essence at the ashram.

Asaram was also criticized for wasting water as a part of pre- Holi celebrations last year in Nagpur when the state was under drought conditions. He was accused of wasting lakhs of liters of water when Maharashtra did not enough water for domestic chores.

But this year authorities of the ashram think that the number of people will be less compared to the previous years, considering the arrest of Asaram.

Asaram is currently held under arrest in a jail in Rajasthan in two different cases of rape and sexual assault in Jodhpur and Ahmedabad respectively. The authorities are hence planning to observe the festival in a different manner by organizing a sant sammelan on the day of the festival.

The authority members also mentioned that some of the well-known Bollywood and TV actors are expected for the function. The members believe that the actors who came in the earlier years are looked forward as they have displayed their faith and belief for the ashram.

The Surat police had held Asaram and his son, who are now in jail for rape, sexual assault and illegal confinement as given in complaint by two sisters. The complaint was registered on 6th of October 2013 after the elder sister filed a complaint against Asaram Bapu. Further which the case was taken over and investigated by Ahmedabad police.
