Water scarcity is not a thing of the future anymore. It is very real and it is happening all around us. While we are sitting safely in our homes and offices, there are people in our very own country, not a few hundred kilometers from us dying of thirst. In order to battle this growing water scarcity and help get water more easily, especially in rural countries, Gabriele Diamanti has designed a whole new solar machine that uses just solar energy and the sun’s heat to convert salt water to normal, potable water. The machine can be used on any type of water – even unclean ground water to get clean water. The machine called Eliodomestico is one of the most amazing inventions to date.

The Eliodomestico is a remarkably simple device and extremely simple to use and understand. It does not require electrical power of any sort – solar or otherwise. The Eliodomestico is also easy enough to carry and can easily be taken to any place. It can be set up anywhere and does not take up a lot of space. You can keep it on open ground on barren land, on your terrace, in the veranda, etc. The mechanism is made of just three parts – the top, where the salt water is poured, the middle where the water is converted and the basin where the freshwater can be collected. The mechanism works on the extremely simple mechanism of monsoon or rains. All through the year, water from seas and ponds evaporates and then cools in the cluds where we get freshwater rain.

Similarly, in the top black part of the Eliodomestico, you pour in the salt or muddy/dirty water and leave it there. Leave the machine in the sun and with the solar energy, the water will evaporate and turn into steam. Using a pressure pie, the steam is then transferred into other compartment where it cools down and forms fresh water. The fresh water then collects in the basin of the device and it can be used for drinking or any other purposes. The device is not expensive and can be easily put together for less than $50 (Rs 3300 approx). The machine can produce up to 5 liters of water a day, quite a luxury for those who travel miles daily for even half a liter.

The machine can also be carried on the head as is the custom in most developing countries. It can be installed in a village or at a common location and multiple people can use the fresh water found from the machine. Quite an achievement and we hope the machine comes to rural India soon too!
