May 15 is Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s birthday, and—if sources are to be believed—the Bollywood Queen of the 90s is nearing 50! To this day, Dixit-Nene is one of the best performers Bollywood has ever had the honor of calling their own—from her strong acting skills to her unstoppable dance moves, her talent and grace remain unbeatable.
In honor of her 49th birthday, the very least we can do is take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of her most popular songs. Check out these 11 times that the gorgeous Madhuri Dixit-Nene rocked our world with her dance moves, her sweet smile, and those oh-so-expressive eyes!
1. “Ek Do Teen” from “Tezaab”
No Madhuri Dixit-Nene roundup will ever be complete without the song that landed her on the map in 1988. It remains as unbearably catchy as ever, so I apologize in advance for the fact that this will be stuck in your head for days.
2. “Phool Mangoon Naa Bahar” from “Raja”
This 1995 movie featured Madhuri opposite Sanjay Kapoor, and Nadeem-Shravan’s soundtrack and the film were both big hits with moviegoers.
3. “Mujhe Neend Na Aaye” from “Dil”
It may be over 25 years old, but this classic number from the 1990 film, “Dil,” remains one of my all-time favorite Bollywood love songs. This movie was ultimately a huge hit as well and earned Dixit-Nene her first, of many, Filmfare Awards for Best Actress.
4. “Koyal Si Teri Boli” from “Beta”
Anil Kapoor and Dixit-Nene were one of the most iconic onscreen couples from the ’90s. This catchy tune—and the many other popular “Beta” songs—help bring back memories of this popular Bollywood duo.
5. “Tu Shayar Hai” from “Saajan”
Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt joined Dixit-Nene in this 1991 film that was one of the most commercially successful movies of the decade. Aside from bringing us a great soundtrack, “Saajan” also introduced the world to the onscreen jodi of Dixit Nene and Khan.
6. “Chane Ke Khet Mein” from “Anjaam”
Despite the creepy stalker (played Shahrukh Khan) and the murderously vengeful female force (portrayed by Dixit-Nene), “Anjaam” was a very successful 1994 thriller. Mostly because the movie simultaneously highlighted some of Dixit-Nene’s most impressive acting chops and dancing skills all while pairing her opposite Khan for the very first time.
7. “Maye Ni Maye” from “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”
Sooraj R. Barjatya’s 1994 family drama reunited Dixit-Nene and Salman Khan. The film on love, sacrifice and family quickly became one of the highest-grossing films of its time.
8. “Dholna” from “Dil To Pagal Hai”
After their enmity in “Anjaam” and their shared violent experiences in “Koyla,” Shah Rukh Khan and Dixit-Nene teamed up for the third time in the form of this very lovey-dovey 1997 Yash Chopra film. Audiences clearly also loved King Khan and Dixit-Nene’s jodi when there was no bloodshed or beating involved.
9. “Dola Re Dola” from “Devdas”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and choreographer Saroj Khan created on-screen magic with this 2002 song featuring Dixit-Nene and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at their absolute best. I dare you to find me somebody who does not love this song and its accompanying dance. Seriously, try me.
10. “Aaja Nachle” from “Aaja Nachle”
When Dixit-Nene returned to the screen after a long hiatus with this 2007 movie, the film did not make as big of a box office splash as her fans would have hoped. However, with the title song, she proved without a doubt that her dancing skills have only gotten more impressive with time.
11. “Ghagra” from “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”
If you were unimpressed by Dixit-Nene in 2007, then she left you no choice but to be in awe of her talent in 2013 when she danced opposite Ranbir Kapoor in this “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” special appearance.
