Karan Soni made quite the impression thanks to his comical part in “Deadpool,” playing the loyal friend/taxi driver to Ryan Reynold’s titular superhero. As Dopinder, Soni left the audience in splits whenever he was on-screen and interacting with his superhero passenger (oblivious of his identity, apparently).
Soni appears when Deadpool orders a taxi and they end up bonding when he gives Dopinder tips on how to reclaim his true love Gita, who is with his cousin Bandhu. Oh, and all this while, famous Hindi song “Mera Joota Hai Japani” plays in the background. He will also be seen in the upcoming “Ghostbusters” movie alongside Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. He also appeared alongside Jake Johnson (“New Girl”) and Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) in the movie “Safety Not Guaranteed.”
Evidently, he is here to shine! Here are five things you should definitely know about this talented Indian-American actor:
1. Yes, he’s the guy from the AT&T commercial!
You guessed it, Soni is the same guy from those hilarious AT&T commercials you’ve seen on TV. The “did it hurt when you fell from heaven” guy! I suppose comedy comes naturally to him, no surprises!
2. He was recently signed by CAA:
CAA is one of Hollywood’s top agencies for actors and sportsmen. Their clients include Jennifer Aniston (“Friends”), George Clooney (“ER”), Lupita Nyong’o (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) and our very own Priyanka Chopra and author Amish Tripathi (“The Immortals of Meluha”). Now, Soni will be joining the same league and be repped by the agency. That’s pretty darn spectacular.
3. He is an alumnus of the University of Southern California:
The actor attended the prestigious USC School of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. However, his aim was to study business and maybe bits of acting. He tried acting at a young age and was so nervous that he practically read
his lines straightforward until his teacher really instructed him to step up his game and try. Luckily for him (and us!), he let the actor in him take over. USC is pretty stoked about Soni’s success too!
4. He is no stranger to the small screen
“Deadpool” wasn’t a first-time gig for Soni. He also stars in “Blunt Talk” with Patrick Stewart (“X-Men”) on Starz and “Other Space” on Yahoo!. He also guest-starred on other TV comedies like “The Middle,” “Grinder,” “The Goldbergs,” and “Melissa and Joey.”
5. He wants to do a movie with Karan Johar:
As a sort of experienced newcomer in Hollywood, Soni also hopes to one day make his way to Bollywood. When a fan asked him on Twitter if he was interested, he basically jumped up at the idea and even expressed interest to work with Karan Johar, because who doesn’t? Not only are his films some of the top Bollywood-grossers, Johar could launch him straight into success, like he has done in the past with newbies Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan.
