Abhay Deol is returning to the big screen after two years with his upcoming film, “Happy Bhaag Jayegi.” He will star opposite Diana Penty, who made her debut with 2012’s “Cocktail.” Based on the newly released trailer, the movie looks like a promising romantic comedy infused with some cliches and some surprising twists.
Deol will play Bilal, a Pakistani man who comes across Penty’s Harpreet Kaur (aka Happy) from Punjab, after she runs away from her wedding to Daman Singh Bagga, played by Jimmy Shergill, and ends up in Lahore.
Together, Bilal and Happy end up on a series of adventures, including a kidnapping, songs and dances, and riding autorickshaws for fun—all which eventually culminates in the common India versus Pakistan trope. All of this will, eventually, make sure that our lead duo ends up together.
Deol has already proven his acting chops from his earlier films like “Dev D” to more recent ones like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Shanghai.” In this film as Bilal, he seems to deliver on those talents and is able to pull off the role. He has never been perceived as the conventional Bollywood hero, which is a sad but true fact.
Penty, on the other hand, will be seen in a totally different avatar in her second film. Her no-nonsense, strong-willed character in this film is the opposite of her shy, mild-mannered Meera from “Cocktail.” She failed to make a solid impression with her debut film, so let’s hope she strengthens her position in the industry with this one.
Shergill, who has shown up in his fair share of hit movies such as “Tanu Weds Manu,” “My Name is Khan,” and “A Wednesday,” looks right at home except for the accent, which he does not pull off. Together, the cast seems to share a funny chemistry which might just make the film click.
“Happy Bhaag Jayegi” is written by directed by Mudassar Aziz. It also stars Ali Fazal (“Fukrey”) and Pakistani actress, Momal Sheikh. It will release on August 19.
