Mumbai’s Falguni Shah, more popularly known as Falu, has been breaking new ground in the U.S. music scene since 2000. Since moving to the states, Shah has collaborated with big names such as Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef Jean, Philip Glass, Ricky Martin, Blues Traveler and A.R. Rahman.
Using her classical music training in both the Jaipur and Banaras musical traditions along with her training with the late Ustad Sultan Khan, Shah’s unique musical style brings a modern twist to classic Bollywood tunes.
Shah has been praised for the way she creatively merges Eastern and Western influences in her music, in fact, India’s Economic Times has hailed her as one of the top 20 most influential Global Indian Women. This honor is rightfully deserved when you consider that her performances have been featured on National Geographic, NPR and FOX television. In fact, her original song “Rabba” is famous for being the first Hindi song to be aired on FOX network when it was featured on the network’s “Fearless Music” show.
For all of the above and more, Shah’s performances are not to be missed, especially when she entertained the likes of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama alongside A.R. Rahman during the 2009 State dinner.
If you live in New York City, do not miss the chance to see Shah’s Bollywood Orchestra show live at the Highline Ballroom on Saturday, June 20.
