India won a historic bronze medal in Sepaktakraw after the country’s men team went down 0-2 against defending champions Thailand in their semi-final match in the regu semifinal at the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta. Even though India failed to make it to the final and assure themselves of a silver, the bronze medal was an untouched territory and India will surely be happy with their performance in the multi-sport event. Earlier, India had their campaign with a 2-1 win over Iran but lost their second match 2-0 against Indonesia. However, since Iran had lost both their matches, they were eliminated and India advanced to the semi-finals, assuring themselves of a bronze medal. “It is a historic performance by India. It is the first time that India has won a medal in Sepak takraw in the Asian Games,” Sepak takraw Federation of India secretary general Yogendra Singh Dahiya told PTI.

Sepaktakraw is a volleyball-style sport in which players use their feet, head, knees and chest to hit the ball across the net. They are not allowed to use their hands. There are six teams in the Asiad competition with Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea clubbed in Group A, while India were drawn with Iran and Indonesia in group B.
Meanwhile, India stands at the sixth spot in the medals with nine medals (3 Gold, Silver and 3 Bronze).
