Mahindra Thar Overview

Mahindra Thar is one of affordable SUVs available in the Indian market purely intended off-roading and adventure. The company introduced Mahindra Thar in the year 2010 and since then it haven’t received any updation to it styling, safety, specifications or comfort. But in 2015, company introduced the refurbished version of Mahindra Thar with noticeable up-gradation to exterior as well as quality. Moreover, Firstly making its appearance at the 13th edition of Auto Expo 2016, the Mahindra Thar DayBreak edition managed to catch many eyes at the event. To take things further, Mahindra has rolled-out this special edition for the general public which will be available under company's sub-brand - Mahindra customization. The rugged, bold and muscular appearance of the customized Thar (customization only) comes with a price tag near about INR 9.6 lakh which is exclusive of taxes. Moreover, the hard top which comes as an option will be heavier on the pocket by INR 1.5 lakh and the overall customization process of the off-roader SUV will invest minimum 2 months.

Exterior

Mahindra & Mahindra incorporated all the necessary elements into this off-roader to make it as a pure sport utility vehicle by adding few worthy changes to its exterior and yet maintaining its signature body structure. It gets new fender extensions that go well with the stylish appearance. Moreover, the elegant round shaped headlight cluster and the radiator grille has been retained from its predecessor along with the bonnet that continues to get same curvy edges. Talking about the side profiles, specifically designed fenders add bold appeal to the side facet. As far as the dimensions are concerned, the overall length, width and height measures 3920mm, 1726mm and 1930mm respectively. The wheelbase measures 2430mm and ground clearance of 200mm makes it easy to deal with terrains. The special edition of Thar comes with bold and aggressive looks which is accentuated by black colored grille, projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, auxiliary lights, broader bonnet and red headlights with matte grey finish. The main attraction of the special edition is the inclusion of arge 37-inch Maxxis Trepadors off-road tyres with steel wheels. The rear end gets customized bumper, a full-sized spare tyre, elevated dual chrome exhausts and LED tail lights.

Interiors

Mahindra Thar gets modified internal cabin that further enhances the internal look as compared to its previous model. The cockpit section gets all new dashboard with 2-tone color scheme and redesigned instrument cluster. Moreover, the gearshift knob houses a leatherette cover that proffers a premium look to the cabin. The level of comfort is further enhanced as the seats are widened and more cushions are being added to it. However, the remaining aspects of the cabin are retained from the previous version. However, the Mahindra Thar DayBreak edition gets a touchscreen infotainment system, four waterproof speakers, dual tone interior scheme, and Sparco rally seats.

Engine and Performance

The new modified version of Mahindra Thar is available in two diesel engine options. The base variant and mid range trim are powered by a 2.5litre MDI 320TC L diesel engine that offers displacement capacity of 2523cc and churns maximum power of 63bhp and peak torque of 182Nm. Whereas the top trim model is equipped with a 2.5 litre CRDe diesel engine that produces 105bhp at 3,800rpm and a peak torque of 247Nm at 1,800-2,000rpm. Both the diesel engines are mated with 5-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the Mahindra That DayBreak edition is powered by the same 2.5-litre CRDe Diesel that is capable of producing 105bhp of maximum power at 3800rpm against the peak torque of 247Nm in between 1800rpm – 2000rpm. Power will be transmitted to the all four-wheels via 5-speed manual transmission.

Competition

Mahindra Thar really does not face much of the competition from the market. The sole competitor to Mahindra Thar is Force Gurkha.

In India, there are very limited options for off-road enthusiasts or adventure aficionado. Mahindra has been focusing on these types of customer who would do anything for adventure. The earlier range of Thar had previously created an enormous fan following since its launch and is the evolved edition of the CL340 and the MM 540. It is the most preferred and entertaining 4×4 motor vehicle for off-road enthusiasts, yet whenever we talked about the interiors it was disappointing.
