Bengaluru: As summer has just started, residents of Bengaluru are already feeling the heat. Citing the rising temperatures the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority has released certain guidelines in preparation for an anticipated heatwave in the state over the coming days. In the circular, the state government stated that the IMD predicted heatwave conditions and above-normal temperatures in several parts of the country.
• According to the circular, people are advised to stay indoors during the peak temperatures, between noon to 3 pm.
• The residents are also advised to drink plenty of water on a regular basis in order to avoid dehydration.
• The circular also suggest people to wear light-coloured and cotton clothes, eyeshades and umbrellas/hat.
• The state government urged people to avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and cold drinks as these beverages dehydrate body.
• People are also advised to keep their pets in the shade, providing them with plenty of drinking water.
• People are also advised to visit a doctor if they feel dizzy or sick due to soaring temperatures.
“At present, some parts of the state’s north hinterland, south hinterland and coastal areas are recording temperatures 2-3 degrees above normal which can be harmful to both humans and animals. IMD has indicated that the upcoming hot weather in Karnataka will be above normal during April-May 2024. The forecast increase in temperature is likely to exceed normal heatwave days across the state by 2-14 days. Also, since 223 taluks have already been declared as drought-prone taluks in the state, it is suitable to give suggestions to prevent and reduce the adverse effect of the heat wave,” the Karnataka Government circular read.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heatwaves which will expected to be prevailed from April 4 to April 6 in Kalaburgi, Hubballi, Hosapete, and Ballari. On the contrary, Bengaluru city is also expected to receive rainfall from April 13-14, after Ugadi.
The circular also warned against health effects of warm winds and heatwaves like dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunstroke. “Swelling and fainting are usually accompanied by fever below 102 degrees Fahrenheit, causing heat cramps. Sunstroke can be identified with symptoms like body temperature rising to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and changes in breathing and loss of consciousness,” the circular read.
