3 Cops Dead, Dozen Injured As Truck Rams Van Carrying Police Personnel For Poll Duty In Bihar’s Gopalganj

Three policemen were killed and a dozen sustained injuries when a Bihar Police van was rammed by a speeding container truck in Gopalganj district on Sunday.

Bihar Accident: Three police personnel died while at least 12 others sustained injuries when police van they were travelling in was rammed by a speeding truck in Gopalganj district of Bihar on Sunday. Official said the tragic mishap occurred near the Barhima Bazar when the police team was headed to Supaul for Lok Sabha election duty.

“A police van carrying policemen on election duty had halted near Barhima Bazar when a speeding container truck rammed into it from behind,” Gopalganj SP office said in a official statement.

As per the statement, two policemen died on the spot while a dozen others were injured in the accident. Later, another police personnel, succumbed to his at a state-run hospital, it said, adding all the deceased were constables of the Bihar Police.

The container truck has been seized by the police but its driver managed to flee, police said.

Meanwhile, the Bihar police in a statement said the force has decided to provide a one-time grant of Rs 25 lakh to the family of each deceased.

Additionally, the Deputy Inspector General of Police of Saran range, under which Gopalganj district comes, will also provide the next of kin of each dead policeman a one-time grant of Rs 10 lakh.

The Bihar police has also requested the district election officer to write to the Election Commission for the payment of an ex-gratia of Rs 15 lakh to each bereaved family since they died on election duty.

Besides, the Bihar Police will also provide jobs to one of the dependents of the deceased policemen on compensatory grounds, the statement said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the death of the three policemen and injury to others in the accident. Kumar also directed the officials concerned to ensure that the injured policemen get the best possible treatment.
