8th Pay Commission update: For the past few months, government employees have been hoping for some relief before the 8th Pay Commission. There was talk among employee organisations that the government might add dearness allowance (DA) to the basic salary. Various speculations were rife, but the government has clarified the current situation. A clear statement from the government has put an end to all these discussions. Now, employees and pensioners are once again keenly watching to see how much relief the 8th Pay Commission will bring to their pockets.
The government has made it clear that for now there is no proposal to merge dearness allowance (DA) with basic pay. This information was provided by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on December 1, 2025. He stated, “At present, there is no proposal for adding dearness allowance to the basic salary under consideration of the government.”
This response was given in response to questions from MP Anand Bhadoria, who pointed out that inflation has risen so rapidly over the past 30 years that the DA and DR paid to employees and pensioners are no longer in line with actual retail inflation. This is why many employee organizations have long demanded that at least 50 percent of the DA be included in the basic salary.
When will the 7th Pay Commission period end?
Meanwhile, the term of the Seventh Pay Commission is coming to an end on December 31st. Employees are increasingly wondering whether DA and DR will continue to increase as before until the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, or whether they will be temporarily suspended.
