Central government employees and pensioners have been waiting for the 8th Pay Commission for a long time. Now, their wait may finally end. The government has said that it is actively discussing the matter with state governments, and an official announcement about setting up the 8th Central Pay Commission is expected soon. According to a report in Financial Express, a delegation from the Government Employees National Confederation (GENC) met Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh last month. GENC is the top body of employee unions linked with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS). During the meeting, the representatives raised concerns about the delay in forming the 8th Pay Commission, along with other issues.

It is worth noting that the 8th Pay Commission was announced in January this year, but no significant progress has been made since then. Employees are especially waiting for the appointment of the main members of the commission and the final draft of its Terms of Reference (ToR).

Key issues discussed in the meeting:

• Delay in setting up the 8th Pay Commission.
• Demand to end the National Pension System (NPS) and Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), and restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
• Release of 18 months of pending Dearness Allowance (DA), which was frozen during the Covid-19 period.

Central Pay Commission to Be Formed Soon

According to reports, Jitendra Singh has assured that the 8th Central Pay Commission will be set up very soon. He told a delegation of employee representatives that the government will make the announcement soon and even arranged an immediate meeting with the Pension Secretary to discuss restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

Why is the 8th Pay Commission important?

Every ten years, the pay, allowances, and pensions of central government employees are revised through a new Pay Commission. The last revision happened under the 7th Pay Commission. With the upcoming 8th Pay Commission, employees and pensioners are expecting a rise in basic salary, allowances, and pensions.

Allowances that may be removed

Reports suggest that some allowances could be discontinued under the new pay commission. These include travel allowance, special duty allowance, smaller regional allowances, and some old departmental allowances like typing/clerical allowance. However, there has been no official confirmation yet. The government’s goal is to make the salary structure more rational and simplified this time as well.
