New Delhi, December 13: The government on Wednesday issued a notification saying that it has taken back the December 31 deadline for linking bank accounts with the 12-digit biometric identifier Aadhaar number. The government postponed the Aadhaar-bank account linking deadline to March 31, 2018.
Earlier this month, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the date to link Aadhaar details with PAN to March 31, 2018. “Some of the taxpayers have not yet completed the linking of PAN with Aadhaar. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the time for linking of Aadhaar with PAN till 31.03.2018”, the Income Tax Department said in a tweet. At first, the 12 digit UID details were to be linked with PAN by August 31, 2017. The date was then extended until December 31, 2017.
The government had, in June, made Aadhaar mandatory for opening bank accounts. It has been made mandatory by the government to link Aadhaar to Bank accounts, PAN cards, mobile numbers and various social schemes to avail uninterrupted services. The deadline to link bank accounts with Aadhaar was December 31 which has now been extended while that of linking mobile numbers with Aadhaar is February 6, 2018. On Thursday, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)- that issues that Aadhaar card clarified that the deadlines for linking various services like bank accounts, PAN cards and mobile SIM cards with Aadhaar number stand valid and legal. It said that as on date there is no stay from the Supreme Court on Aadhaar and its linking to various services.
