A notification has also been issued by the government that all bank account holders need to link their Aadhaar numbers failing which, access to the bank accounts will be disabled after December 31. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that Aadhaar will be mandatory for filing Income Tax returns and applying for PAN from July 1, 2017. Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides for mandatory quoting of Aadhaar or enrollment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of income tax returns and making application for allotment of PAN with effect from July 1 this year. The government has already made it compulsory to link Aadhaar with PAN to avoid individuals using multiple PANs to evade taxes. Right from filing income tax returns to benefitting from various government schemes, the Government is slowly making it mandatory to furnish a copy of Aadhaar Card for a lot of procedures. Many banks have added an option to add Aadhaar details online or through SMS in a particular format to a specific number provided by the bank. The method is termed as Aadhaar seeding. Banks have also encouraged customers to link their Aadhaar number to their bank account at an ATM. To file income tax returns
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) clarified that Aadhaar will be mandatory for filing I-T returns and while applying for new PAN from July 1, 2017. The government has given a deadline to all taxpayers to link their Aadhaar with PAN cards by June 30. Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides for mandatory quoting of Aadhaar or enrollment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of income tax returns and making application for allotment of PAN with effect from July 1 this year.
Students of government schools will not be able to avail the benefit of mid-day meal from July 1 if they do not have Aadhaar card with them. In a recent notification by the HRD Ministry, students will have to make sure that they have their Aadhaar cards before June 30 so that they are not deprived of their rights.
Scholarship for school and college students
A notification has been issued by the HRD ministry that all students who are planning to apply for the scholarship will have to furnish the Aadhaar details to avail the scheme. Students who are already availing this facility and do not have an Aadhaar card will have to make sure that they have one before the end of this month.
Linking your PF account with Aadhaar card
It has become compulsory to link an individual’s PF account with their Aadhaar numbers. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has urged its 4 crore members to link their accounts with Aadhaar before June 30. PF account holders in the northeastern states have been asked to link PF account with Aadhaar till September 30, 2017. With this, details of the account holders can be directly verified with the help of Aadhaar number.
To avail benefits of Public Distribution System (PDS)
The government has made it mandatory to furnish Aadhaar card to avail the benefits given under Public Distribution System (PDS). Individuals will have to link their Aadhaar cards to Ration cards before July 1 to get all the facilities given by the government.
To book train tickets online
If you wish to avail offers and discounts (concessional tickets) given by Indian Railways, it is mandatory for individuals to have an Aadhaar card. To curb the menace of black marketing of railway tickets, the IRCTC has made it compulsory for individuals to have Aadhaar card.
To apply for passport
The government has listed Aadhaar card as one of the mandatory documents for applying for a passport. If you wish to have a passport made, you will have to have your Aadhaar card with you.
No PAN card without Aadhaar card
The government has given a deadline to all taxpayers to link their Aadhaar with PAN cards by June 30. The 12-digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is also mandatory for any financial transaction of Rs 50, 000 and above and to access to banking and filing I-T returns. It has become mandatory for taxpayers to link both their identity proofs- the Aadhaar Card and the PAN card to file their returns. It has to be noted that even if your income is below the taxable limit and you don’t fall in the category for filing income tax returns, it is compulsory to link your PAN with Aadhaar. If not done, your PAN is liable of becoming invalid.
