Aadhaar PAN Card Link: Do it in Next 8 Days Otherwise You Will Not be Able to File ITR This Year
A senior official of Central Board of Direct Taxes said on the condition of anonymity, “Linking of PAN card and Aadhaar number is the must."
You need to link your PAN with Aadhaar card by June 30 to be able to file income tax return (ITR) this year. Without linking the two your ITR form will not be processed.
A senior official of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said on the condition of anonymity, “Linking of PAN card and Aadhaar number is the must, as it eases filing of ITR. Without linking the two it will be difficult to file ITR.”
Clarifying further the official said it will, however, not invalidate your PAN card, which was the rule earlier.
The CBDT has extended the deadline for the linkage of PAN-Aadhaar to June 30, 2018. Previously the deadline to link the two was March 31, 2018.
Last year the linking of Pan and Aadhaar Card was made applicable on July 1. For people who managed to file their ITR before July 1, 2017 the deadline was extended to March 31, 2018, which later got extended to June 30, 2018.
Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act states that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities.
Having said that if you haven’t linked the two, do so before 30th June this year in order to stay away from unnecessary hassles.
The last order from the CBDT came following the Supreme Court direction asking for the extension of the deadline of March 31 for linking of Aadhaar number with various services. The apex court asked to extend the deadline until the final judgment is given on the issue.
A tax expert who does not want to be quoted, said, “Though there is the Supreme Court direction, one will not be able to file ITR without linking the two. CBDT circular clearly say it to do by June 30, 2018. Moreover, it is mandatory to quote your Aadhaar number in the ITR form.”
However, Non-resident Indians (NRI) do not need link Aadhaar and PAN card.
