Mumbai, June 30: People across the nation have been facing trouble linking their Aadhaar card to PAN card. The Income Tax Department’s website crashed on Thursday but was later restored. There has been a mad rush for linking both the identity proofs as the last day for linking Aadhaar and PAN is June 30. Linking of both the documents has now become a mandatory procedure for filing Income Tax returns. To easily link both the documents, the Income Tax Department has launched various methods by which people can link Aadhaar and PAN hassle free.
If the Income Tax Website is running slow and you still can link your Aadhaar to PAN, you can use the SMS facility that has been rolled out by the Income Tax department. The IT department issued advertisements in leading national newspapers and mentioned how both the unique identity numbers of an individual can be linked by sending an SMS to either 567678 or 56161.
Here is how you can use the SMS facility to link Aadhaar with PAN
- Send SMS to 567678 or 56161 in the following format
- UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN>
- Example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234Z
To link Aadhaar and PAN, people can also visit the official e-filing website of the department to link the two identities, in both the cases identical names in the two databases or in case where there is a minor mismatch. It said linking the two numbers is the key to “seamlessly avail online, a world of income tax facilities.” “Aadhaar can also be seeded into PAN database by quoting Aadhaar in PAN application form for new PAN allotment or by quoting Aadhaar in change request form used for a reprint of PAN card,” it said in the advertisement.
The IT-department earlier this month, launched a new e-facility to help taxpayers link Aadhaar with the PAN. The department’s e-filing website hosted a new link on its homepage to link the two unique identities. All that was required from an individual is to punch in his PAN number, Aadhaar number and the exact name as given in the Aadhaar card. “After verification from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the linking will be confirmed.
In its advisory to taxpayers and individuals, the IT department was quoted by PTI saying, “In case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided, Aadhaar OTP (one-time password) will be required”. The OTP will be sent on the registered mobile number in the Aadhaar database. The government, under the Finance Act 2017, has made it mandatory for taxpayers to quote Aadhaar or enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of Income-Tax returns (ITR). Also, Aadhaar has been made mandatory for applying for permanent account number with effect from July 1, 2017.
If you are not linking your PAN to Aadhaar, chances are that it might be marked as invalid. Once the Aadhaar-PAN linking is done, an individual can e-Verify your IT returns using Aadhaar and by linking the two cards you will no longer have to submit your Income Tax acknowledgement to the IT department. Another key feature of linking both the identity documents is that both are unique identification cards that serve as proof of identity that are necessary for registration and verification purposes.
