New Delhi, November 16: The government has made it mandatory to verify your mobile number with Aadhaar for all existing customers before February 6, 2018. Telecom companies have been constantly instructing their customers to start the process of linking Aadhaar card with phone numbers to avoid last minute hassle. Failing to link Aadhaar details with SIM or mobile number will cost deactivation of the user’s mobile number. Linking of Aadhaar with mobile is being done as per the orders of Supreme Court passed in February this year in Lokniti foundation case and all SIM cards have to be verified with Aadhaar within a year from the date of judgement, with all unlinked phones to be deactivated after February next year, so criminals, fraudsters and terrorists cannot use the issued SIMs.
At present, there are about 128 million mobile phone connections in the country and over 25% of SIM cards have been linked to Aadhaar. Aadhaar- the 12-digit unique identification number has become one of the most important documents to have as it has become mandatory to avail essential services. Apart from Aadhaar-SIM linking, the government has also made it mandatory to link Aadhaar with Bank Accounts, social schemes, mutual funds and insurance policies. The linking the Aadhaar to PAN card has also been made mandatory by the government to file Income Tax returns as well as applying for a new PAN card.

In February, the government had told the Supreme Court that it would put in place, within a year, an effective mechanism for the verification of pre-paid mobile users who constitute 90 per cent of the total subscribers. Asking the government to put in place the mechanism for the verification of existing pre-paid mobile connection holders “as early as possible”, the court disposed of the petition by Lokniti Foundation seeking the scrutiny of the subscribers so that those having pre-paid mobile connections on fake identities are weeded out.
