Nagpur: In a major action against fake birth and death certificates, the Maharashtra government has issued an order immediately cancelling all the certificates issued solely on the basis of Aadhaar cards or those that are found to be suspicious. State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday directed officials to lodge police complaints against those who are involved in forged documents and papers. As per the Revenue Department circular, tehsildars, subdivisional officers, district collectors, and divisional commissioners are responsible for reviewing certificates by using a 16-point verification system. The order was issued after a high-level meeting that was chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) and Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue).
State Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that the state government will not allow fake and fraudulent certificates in the state. “Any suspicious entry must be cancelled without delay,” Bawankule said.
The state government has also instructed authorities to cancel all birth and death certificates that were issued by naib-tahsildars following the amendment on August 11, 2023. The action will be taken, as most of the certificates were approved without proper documentation and verification. As per the circular, the Aadhaar Card cannot be considered as proof of birth or birthplace.
“If any mismatch is found, a police case will be filed immediately,” Bawankule said.
The state government has instructed police to register FIRs in such cases. As per an internal review, cops have identified several hotspots where fake and fraudulent certificates were issued. The places are – Amravati, Sillod, Akola, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, Latur, Anjangaon Surji, Achalpur, Pusad, Parbhani, Beed, Gevrai, Jalna, Ardhapur and Parli.
District collectors and tehsildars have been instructed to take stringent action in this regard.
“We are committed to restoring integrity to the certification process,” Bawankule said.
