New Delhi, Nov 11: In yet another non-populist decision taken by the Narendra Modi government, it has decided to impose massive levies on flights of major routes. The decision taken by Civil Aviation Ministry is set to to increase air fares drastically. Government is set to impose up to Rs 8,500 levy on flights of all major routes. Levies of Rs 7,500 would be imposed on flights of up to 1000 kilometres. The levy would be increased to Rs 8000 on flights ranging between 1000-15000 kms. For those aircrafts travelling beyond 1,500 kms, the levy imposed would be Rs 8,500. The decision has been taken by the central government to boost regional activity.
The surcharge income earned through the inflated air tickets would be used to create air terminals and flight routes between Tier-II cities. Connecting the second-rated towns and cities of India with modern ways of transport was one of core agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With increasing disposable income among households, the government is taking steps to ensure that air terminals reaches towards all parts of the nation.
For flights between 1,000-1,500 km, the levy will be Rs 8,000 and for flights beyond 1,500 km, the levy will be Rs 8,500.

The decision taken by the government is bound to agitate the frequent air travellers, especially the middle-class businessmen. The increased tariffs would burn a major hole in their pockets, and could further compel them to switch back to Railways. The decision taken by Railways comes at a time when several domestic air carriers began offering massive seasonal discounts to secure pre-bookings and boost their sales.
