Aman Jain appointed as Meta India’s new public policy chief: Everything you need to know

Aman Jain has been named as the new Head of Public Policy for Meta India, the company announced on Wednesday. Jain will join Meta early next year and report to Simon Milner, Vice President of Policy for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Commenting on the announcement, Meta said in a statement that Jain will also be a part of its India leadership team and help shape the company’s policy approach across its various platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

“I have known Aman for many years, and have seen him build a deep and diverse network across technology, government and international organisations. His vast experience and understanding of the policy landscape will help us build on our already strong partnership with policymakers at a key moment in the development of the technology ecosystem in India,” Milner said.

Jain has previously worked as the Director of Public Policy at Amazon India. He was responsible for public policy strategy and engagement for Amazon’s marketplace business operations in India, competition matters, technology issues, and regulators. Prior to Amazon, Jain worked for over seven years at Google India, including in the senior leadership roles of Country Head for Government Affairs and Public Policy, and later Industry Head.

He has also held various roles within the Government of India, as well as in advisory and consultant roles with international organisations like the U.S. Department of Justice. Commenting on Jain’s experience, Milner said that his deep knowledge of public policy and technology will help Meta be “an even more effective partner to regulators and industry stakeholders in developing an enabling policy environment” for India.

Milner added that Ahmedabad’s (sic) digital transformation across sectors like artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and creator economy makes Jain’s leadership role strategic for the company. “We look forward to working closely with him to continue building on this important work in the year ahead,” he added.

Background: Tech Regulation and Industry Dynamics

Jain’s new role comes at a time when both global and Indian regulators are under increased scrutiny of digital platforms on a range of issues from data governance and privacy to emerging technologies like AI. India, in particular, is also working on a host of new regulations around technology and artificial intelligence that require constant engagement with policymakers and stakeholders.

Hiring a seasoned industry veteran on the policy front signals that Meta is looking to play a key role in these debates while also maintaining an ecosystem that supports innovation and is trusted by regulators and the general public. Jain succeeds Shivnath Thukral, who left Meta earlier this year to join fintech firm PhonePe.
