Nepal and India have been trading for many years. However, ongoing unrest led by Gen Z protests in Nepal is raising concerns about disruptions to this critical economic relationship.

The demonstrations, which began in opposition to a social media ban, have since expanded to highlight issues like corruption, unemployment, and poor governance. It is also now resulting in political instability and the fall of the government. It can impact cross-border trade, which could put Nepal’s economic “lifeline” from India in jeopardy.

Nepal imports a wide range of goods from India, including:

  • Food items: rice, grains, vegetables, spices, and sugar

  • Pharmaceuticals, which have high demand in Nepal

The trade relations along with the social and cultural ties between the two neighbors are stronger. From an economic perspective, India is important for Nepal. Many essential goods are not produced locally and they import it from India which are needed in daily life and industrial operations in Nepal.

The violent protests in Kathmandu and the fall of the government have already begun to disrupt cross-border trade. Heightened security measures at the border are slowing the movement of goods, affecting supplies of medicines, petroleum products, agricultural commodities, and industrial machinery.
