The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation is mulling proposals put forth by as many 10 states to rename 22 airports in different cities across the country. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol Thursday said the ministry has received requests from 10 state governments with proposals for renaming 22 airports.
In his reply, Mohol said that said generally, airports are known by the name of the city where they are located, however, if a state government proposes a specific name and a resolution for which is then passed in the respective state Assembly, the Centre is obliged to consider it.
“If a specific name is proposed by the respective state government, supported by a resolution passed in the state legislative assembly, which is then considered in consultation with other ministries/departments and then sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval,” the Minister said.
