India’s telecom sector might soon undergo significant changes, giving way for new companies and fresh investments in the industry. The recommendations made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have been approved, and the Digital Communication Commission (DCC) has given the green light to the new license authorization framework under the revised Telecom Act. This means existing telecom companies will need to transition to the new licensing system. The move could reduce the dominance of Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in the market.

Currently, there are only four major telecom players in India: Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL. However, there was a time when more than 10 telecom companies operated across different regions. Today, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel hold a significant share of the market, creating a duopoly. This limits customer choices and reduces competition. In September, TRAI proposed these recommendations to address the issue and increase market competition.

New telecom companies to launch, more investments expected

The telecom sector in India is set for a major transformation as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) top decision-making body, the Digital Communication Commission (DCC), has approved a new license authorization framework. This commission includes secretaries from five different ministries.

The new framework will follow the principle of “One Nation, One Authorization.” Initially, only captive service authorization will be allowed, but more options may be added later.

In its recommendations made in September, TRAI clarified that all existing companies will also have to transition to the new license system. The timeline for this transition will be decided by the Department of Telecommunications.

Will Elon Musk’s starlink come to India?

TRAI’s recommendations clearly state that under the new license framework, satellite-based companies can also apply for licenses to offer their services. Elon Musk’s Starlink, one of the leading satellite internet providers in the world, has been planning to launch its services in India for a long time.

With this new licensing framework, the chances of Starlink entering the Indian market have become stronger, paving the way for advanced satellite-based internet services in the country.
