Vodafone Idea (Vi) is gearing up to launch its 5G mobile broadband services in March 2025, aiming to regain market share with aggressively priced plans and strategic market positioning. Initially, Vi plans to roll out 5G across 75 cities, focusing on industrial hubs and high data consumption zones in its 17 priority circles.

Vodafone To Compete With Jio, Airtel

Vi is expected to price its entry-level 5G plans up to 15% cheaper than those offered by competitors Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal led Bharti Airtel, potentially igniting a tariff war in the telecom market.

According to an Economic Times report, the company’s commitment to providing the best experience and competitive pricing, leveraging its substantial and competitive 5G spectrum holdings in priority markets.

Vi also plans to increase dealer commissions and promotional spending to attract high-value 5G prepaid users from competitors. In FY24, Vi spent approximately Rs 3,583 crore (8.4% of sales) on dealer commissions, surpassing Jio’s Rs 3,000 crore (3% of sales) but trailing Airtel’s Rs 6,000 crore (4% of sales).

Market Dynamics

Unlike Jio and Airtel, which raised the minimum thresholds for 5G plans during July 2024 tariff hikes, Vi aims to keep its 5G pricing lower to attract subscribers. Vi CEO Akshaya Moondra indicated that a final decision on 5G pricing will be made closer to the launch date.

Vi is bolstered by Rs 24,000 crore in equity funding and anticipates raising another Rs 25,000 crore in debt, supported by the government’s bank guarantee waiver. This funding is crucial for expanding 4G coverage and rolling out 5G services, addressing user losses, and regaining subscriber share.

Major Network Expansion Plans

Vi recently secured Rs 30,000 crore ($3.6 billion) worth of deals with global network vendors Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung to boost its network infrastructure. The company plans to deploy 75,000 5G sites within three years, with thousands of new sites expected by March 2025.

Vi’s initial 5G rollout will utilize a mix of 3.5 GHz (C-band) and 1,800 MHz spectrum for enhanced connectivity. The telco aims to cater to industrial hubs and high-usage zones, targeting areas where data demand is highest. Vi’s network expansion is expected to revolutionize the digital experience for its users, with enhanced 4G services complementing its 5G rollout.

The March 2025 5G launch is seen as a critical milestone in this journey.
