Big trouble for Mukesh Ambani, as this decision by government set to affect...

As the government has given a big financial boost of ₹6,000 crore to the BSNL, who is rapidly expanding its services, it can cause concern to India’s richest businessman, Mukesh Ambani. By providing connectivity in remote areas and adding subscribers at a fast pace, BSNL is emerging as a strong competitor to Reliance Jio, reducing its user base.

BSNL’s Threat To Mukesh Ambani

BSNL has taken a major initiative in the expansion of its 4G network to remote areas of Ladakh. It is planning to give a big boost by installing towers at an altitude of 14,500 feet in Ladakh, which could be a significant milestone for the area. This ambitious project aims to connect regions that have long been isolated, setting BSNL apart from other providers. If BSNL becomes sucessfull in delivering connectivity in such challenging locations, it can position itself as a serious rival to Reliance Jio.

Govt Support To BSNL

The Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has disclosed that more than 35,000 4G towers have already been installed nationwide, with a target of 1 lakh towers by June 2025. Government support has been crucial to this expansion, with a special emphasis on improving connectivity across India’s most remote areas. BSNL’s network now extends from Malapu in Arunachal Pradesh to Phobrang in Ladakh, making it a key player in providing widespread and affordable connectivity.

Surge In BSNL’s Subscriber

BSNL’s growth might have surprised top telecom companies, like Jio, Airtel, and Vi. Recently, these companies raised their mobile recharge plan prices, after which many customers started switching to BSNL due to its affordable plans and improving service quality. According to TRAI data, BSNL has added 29.4 lakh new subscribers in July 2024 alone, while Jio, Airtel, and Vi witnessed a decrease in their customer bases.

BSNL’s Big Challenge To Mukesh Ambani

BSNL’s rapid expansion and growing popularity has given a significant challenge to Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio. As BSNL strengthens its presence, particularly in underserved areas, now the question arises that can Jio also compete with BSNL’s low-cost and wide-reaching services? The future of India’s telecom sector is dependent on Mukesh Ambani’s next strategic move, which may not only shape Jio’s trajectory but also impact the entire industry.
