New Delhi: In what can be considered good news for the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the number of subscribers of the company has witnessed a major spike in last few months. This news will boost the confidence of the company which has been which had lagged behind the private telecom companies. This comes following recent tariff hikes by Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, a large number of customers are now opting for BSNL.
According to the latest data from telecom regulator TRAI, BSNL’s customer base has been growing over the past two months. This growth is also attributed to its lower tariffs and the ‘soft launch’ of 4G services.
While all the other big companies including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea witnessed a decline in customer base in July, BSNL, on the other hand, added around 3 million new customers. Airtel lost 1.7 million, Vodafone Idea lost 1.4 million, and Jio lost approximately 0.8 million users.
In August as well, BSNL was the only company that experienced a rise in customers, adding 2.5 million new users. During this period, Jio lost 4 million, Airtel lost 2.4 million, and Vodafone Idea lost 1.9 million users.
BSNL’s market share remains significantly lower compared to its major private competitors. Jio leads with a 40.5% share, followed by Airtel with a 33% share and Vodafone Idea with 18%. According to TRAI, BSNL’s share currently stands at 7.8%. If MTNL’s 0.2% share is included, it reaches 8%.
In comparison, BSNL’s ARPU is around Rs 90, indicating that this government-owned company charges the lowest tariffs from its consumers. One reason for the lower tariffs is that BSNL has yet to officially launch high-speed 4G. Meanwhile, private operators like Jio and Airtel have already transitioned a significant portion of their user base to 5G.
