As per updates, the economic package is likely to focus on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and daily wage workers apart from injecting liquidity in the market. The development comes as the central government has been in constant contact with the Reserve Bank of India, capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India for the announcement of the package. Meanwhile, a number of industry leaders and state chief ministers have also been demanding financial support from the Centre in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
As per the previous announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a special COVID-19 Economic Task Force has also been formed to give suggestions to the Finance Ministry and top officials. The task force is also intensively working on the plan.
Addressing a press conference, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier said that the economic package is in works and the government will announce the package to help the markets and industry very soon.
As the number of coronavirus cases in the country has crossed 600, PM Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day countrywide lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.
