CNG continues to be one of the most widely used and economical fuel options for public transport vehicles, private cars, and commercial fleets across several Indian cities. Over the past decade, the country has witnessed a sharp rise in CNG consumption. Stress and concern over crude oil and LPG, CNG, and PNG costs continue as the tensions in West Asia disrupt energy supplies.

What is CNG?

CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). It is a type of fuel made from compressed natural gas and is primarily composed of methane. The main characteristic of CNG is that, even after being compressed, it will always remain in a gaseous state. CNG is typically used as a fuel source for vehicles and is generally considered “cleaner” and produces “less pollution” than many other fuels.

• CNG is a clean fuel because of its low CO2 emissions as compared to diesel and petrol.
• The operating cost of CNG vehicles is comparatively lower than vehicles running on other fuels.

Earlier on Friday, Congress launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that he has “unleashed the whip” on the public after the Centre increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 across the country.

Congress, linking the fuel price hike to the completion of the Assembly election in four states and one union territory, said that PM Modi’s “vasooli (extortion) begins” after the elections.

“Inflation Man Modi has once again unleashed the whip on the public today. Petrol and diesel have been increased by 3-3 rupees. Meanwhile, CNG prices have also been raised by 2 rupees. Elections over – Modi’s extortion begins,” Congress said.

The discussion came amid heightened global concerns after shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s crude oil, natural gas and LPG normally flows, was disrupted following the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
