A potential dispute is coming up over the division of the late Ratan Tata’s estate, as one of the inheritors, Mohini Mohan Dutta, has reportedly expressed expectations for a larger settlement. Dutta, a former Tata Group employee with a long-standing personal bond with the late industrialist, is set to receive one-third of Tata’s residual estate. However, his demands appear to exceed the executors’ estimates, leading to a concern among Tata stakeholders, reported Times Of India.

Ratan Tata’s Will

As per Ratan Tata’s will, Mohini Mohan Dutta, now 74, is entitled to one-third of the residual estate, which includes bank deposits exceeding Rs 350 crore and proceeds from the auction of personal belongings such as paintings and watches, claimed TOI report.

The remaining two-thirds of the residual estate is bequeathed to Ratan Tata’s half-sisters, Shireen Jejeebhoy and Deanna Jejeebhoy, who are also executors of the will. Tata’s primary assets, such as shares in Tata Group and non-Tata companies, have been allocated to his two philanthropic foundations.

While Dutta has signaled his willingness to accept one-third of the residual estate, he has indicated that he expects his share to be worth around Rs 650 crore. This figure has surprised stakeholders, as formal valuation of the estate suggests that Dutta’s portion is unlikely to reach this amount.

The will has not yet been probated in the Bombay High Court, leaving room for legal contention. There is no official comment by Dutta on his beneficiary status or related matters.

No Stake For Tata Family Members In Will

According to current media reports, Tata stakeholders have pointed out that several family members, including Ratan Tata’s half-brother Noel Tata and his children, were excluded from the will. However, Jimmy Tata, Ratan Tata’s brother, is allocated a property worth Rs 50 crore. The inclusion of an external individual like Dutta as a major beneficiary has sparked debate within the Tata ecosystem.

The will’s executors include not only the half-sisters but also Darius Khambata and Mehli Mistry, trustees of Tata Trusts.

Dutta And Ratan Tata Connection

Dutta’s relationship with Ratan Tata dates back to their first meeting in Jamshedpur, when Tata was 24 years old. Their connection grew stronger over the years, with Ratan Tata supporting Dutta’s career and entrepreneurial ventures.

Dutta began his career with the Taj Group and later established Stallion Travel Agency, which received investment from Tata Industries. This agency was eventually merged with the Taj travel division and later acquired by Tata Capital, which sold it to Thomas Cook (India). The business now operates as TC Travel Services, where Dutta serves as a director.

Additionally, Dutta has received shares in Tata Group companies, including the IPO-bound Tata Capital, reflecting his longstanding ties to the Tata ecosystem.

Controversy Over Dutta’s Claims

While Dutta has been described by some within the Tata circle as positioning himself as Ratan Tata’s “adopted son,” the will explicitly states that Tata never married nor adopted any children. This clarification may become a focal point as discussions around the estate’s distribution continue.
