New Delhi, March 27: India’s largest e-commerce company Flipkart will soon take on MakeMyTrip and Yatra Inc as it is looking forward to independently venture in the online travel agency (OTA) space. You might soon be able to book your flights, trains, buses and hotels through Flipkart’s new initiative. It is reported that Flipkart will launch these services through tie-ups with specific industry partners, the ones mentioned above. Not just this, apparently Flipkart is already looking for a category head, with the company searching relentlessly for prospective candidates.

Flipkart’s diversification in the travel vertical has generated quite a response but nothing is clear as of now since Flipkart hasn’t commented on any of the developments so far. However, speculation began a while back when Rajesh Magow, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of MakeMyTrip (MMT), returned to its board after a two-year gap. It might be interesting to know that there is a common connection between the largest e-commerce company and MMT and that is both of the companies share their single investor-Naspers.

Flipkart’s CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy had earlier said increasing number of monthly active users on the platform would be a key metric in going forward, hence the news of launching a travel vertical must well be in line with Flipkart’s strategy to diversify into various other categories.

Reportedly, the e-commerce company’s rival Amazon has not plunged into the said domain and continues to focus on the consumer categories only. With its latest OTA move, Flipkart has, as of now beaten Amazon in India.
