Mumbai, May 22: Giving a major fillip to government’s Digital India Initiative, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday inaugurated free Wi-Fi facility at 28 railway stations on Konkan Railway. The Minister also inaugurated improved passenger amenities and facilities at Kudal and Chiplun stations. Indian Railways has tied up with broadband and internet service provider Joister to provide 2 Mbps peer to peer 24 hrs free Wi-Fi internet bandwidth at 28 stations of Konkan Railway. In India, Wi-Fi facility has been rolled out at 117 Stations so far and these 28 stations now add to the list.
In line with Government’s Digital India Initiative, M/s SYSCON/JOISTER are providing the JOISPOT brand Wi-Fi in Pune & Mumbai educational institutes in Maharashtra state and have now undertaken as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity of providing FREE Wi-Fi bandwidth to the rural area on the Konkan route.

“We are launching free Wi-Fi facility at the railway stations across the country under the Digital India campaign. CEO of Google Sundar Pichai too has shown interest in this project… We are committed to enhance and enrich the passenger comfort across the Indian Railway and believe that we would do it,” Prabhu said at the inauguration ceremony.
The facility covers the station entrance and circulating area. JOISPOT Free Wi-Fi mobile app provides 2 MBPS high speed Wireless internet with unlimited uploads. The 28 stations of Konkan Railway will have 2 Mbps peer to peer 24 hrs FREE Wi-Fi INTERNET bandwidth.
Unlimited FREE Wi-Fi facility will be provided at 28 stations from KOLAD to MADURE in the initial phase with a peer to peer speed of 2 Mbps. The system can provide access to about 300 users at bigger stations and about 100 users at smaller stations.
The FREE Wi-Fi Internet bandwidth is provided at the following Railway stations of Konkan Railway:
Nikunj Kampani, CMD of Joister Infoserve said through the Joister network, the company has now started 24-hours free Wi-Fi with 2 Mbps and it will cover the station entrance and the surrounding area with unlimited data download. The Konkan Railway in a statement said that in order to access the free Wi-Fi, user has to open the Joispot mobile app and register using their name and mobile number to request a one-time password. “Unlimited free Wi-Fi facility will be provided at 28 stations from Kolad to Madure in the initial phase with a peer to peer speed of 2 Mbps. The system can provide access to about 300 users at bigger stations and about 100 users at smaller stations,” PTI reported. Prabhu also inaugurated passenger amenities and facilities at Kudal station which include construction of VIP room, widening of platform numbers one and two among others. Improved passenger amenities at Chiplun station include renovation of waiting hall, 30 meter long additional conventional shelter on platform no two, additional concrete benches on platforms, 15 modular shelters on both platforms, one additional bio-toilet unit on platform number two.
Konkan Railway always believes in providing better passenger amenities to its passengers for their comfortable journey. This move by Indian Railways will help travelling public, commuters and tourists on Indian Railways to access essential information. and they could use their time productively while waiting for trains at railway stations. This initiative of the corporation is a step towards making a smarter India.
Wi-Fi services to passengers are being provided under ‘Railwire’, the retail Broadband distribution model of RailTel. Designed to offer users the best Internet experience, Railwire Wi-Fi will be available to any user who has a working mobile connection on a smartphone. RailTel has taken a lead in providing fast Wi-Fi for the use of passengers at A1, A category Railway stations. RailTel roped in Google as the technology partner for setting up fast Wi-Fi network initially covering 400 stations for providing fast Wi-Fi to millions of passengers every day.
