Visakhapatnam, India In a landmark commitment that signals India's ascent as a global technology hub Google has announced a massive investment of $15 billion over the next five years. This capital injection is dedicated to establishing the company's first-ever Artificial Intelligence AI Hub in the country anchored by a gigawatt scale data center complex in the port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
This investment which Google executives describe as the company's largest AI-focused commitment outside the United States is set to fundamentally accelerate India's digital economy and reinforce its role in the global AI landscape.
A Full Stack AI Ecosystem
The Visakhapatnam AI Hub is far more than just a data centre it represents a comprehensive deployment of Googles full technology stack. The facility will combine three critical elements.
1. Building the AI Engine: Google is setting up enormous data centers specifically to hold its powerful computers. This gigawatt-sized setup will give Google the massive computing muscle it needs to create and run the next generation of AI such as Gemini.
2. Global Connectivity Gateway- The investment includes the construction of a new international subsea gateway This will see multiple high capacity subsea cables land directly in Visakhapatnam enhancing India's digital backbone and providing new resilient connectivity to the rest of the world.
3. Large-Scale Energy Infrastructure- To power this immense operation responsibly Google will collaborate on new transmission lines clean energy generation and energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh.
Strategic Partnerships and National Vision
The announcement made at a highprofile event in New Delhi attended by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the collaboration necessary for a project of this scale.
Google has partnered with key Indian infrastructure players including AdaniConneX and Bharti Airtel to ensure the necessary power and fiberoptic connectivity is in place.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian noted that this initiative is directly aligned with the Indian Governments Viksit Bharat 2047 vision "By delivering industryleading AI infrastructure at scale we are enabling businesses to innovate faster and creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth" he stated.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw thanked Google emphasizing that the digital infrastructure will be pivotal in meeting the goals of the India AI Mission and transforming the countrys entrepreneurial landscape. The project is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs and establish Visakhapatnam as a major global technology destination.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself shared his delight on X formerly Twitter regarding the launch of the Google AI Hub in the dynamic city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The Prime Minister stated that this project aligns directly with the vision to build a Viksit Bharat He added that this multifaceted investment including gigawattscale data center infrastructure will be a powerful force in democratizing technology. It will also ensure AI for All delivering cuttingedge tools to citizens boosting the digital economy and securing Indias place as a global technology leader.
