You have to stop your vehicle and pay a certain amount of tax, depending on the kind of vehicle you are using. This tax that you pay is called a toll tax. These toll plazas are under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a central government entity, which primarily owns and manages toll plazas on national highways. The NHAI is responsible for developing, maintaining, and managing national highways. The toll collected is used for these purposes.

According to the report of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a total of 1,087 toll plazas are functional in the country as of June 2025, and all these toll plazas are part of the 1.5 lakh km long national highway.

Toll is collected on about 45,000 km through these toll plazas. According to the report, a huge increase has been seen in the number of toll plazas in the last few years.

What is the annual income of toll plazas?

One interesting fact is that out of all the toll plazas that are there at present, 457 have been built in the last five years. According to the data presented in the Lok Sabha, these 1,087 toll plazas are earning an average of Rs 168.24 crore per day. That is, their annual income is about Rs 61,408.15 crore.

Which is the most expensive toll plaza in India?

According to government data, the toll plaza located in the Bharthana village of Gujarat is the most expensive in the country. This toll plaza is built on National Highway 48, which connects the national capital Delhi to the economic capital Mumbai.

Apart from this, it is the highest revenue-generating toll plaza in the country. In the last five years, this toll plaza earned Rs 400 crore annually, i.e. Rs 20 thousand crore.
