Turkish Lira: Turkey and Azerbaijan exposed their true faces to the world, as they, along with China, were the only nations that openly stood with Pakistan in its recent conflict with India. While Turkey supplied Pakistan armed forces with the deadly Songar drones that were used to attack Indian cities and military infrastructure, Azerbaijan– considered a satellite state of Ankara– also expressed their support for Islamabad as the India-Pakistan tensions escalated after Operation Sindoor.

But have you wondered where Pakistan’s newfound ‘friends’ stand against the mighty Indian economy, which is 4th largest in the world?

Let us find how the Turkish Lira and the Azerbaijani Manat, the currencies of Turkey and Azerbaijan, respectively, fare against the Indian Rupee:

Turkish Lira vs Indian Rupee

Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency of Lira, and is considered a strong currency in its own right. According to latest exchange rates, 1 TRY is equal to Rs 2.21, which means Rs 100 is equal to 45.28 TRY. This is not a major advantage for Turkey considering the size of India’s population and its gigantic economy.

Azerbaijani Manat vs Indian Rupee

Azerbaijan’s currency is much stronger than the Turkish Lira and the Indian Rupee, with 1 Azerbaijani Manat (AZN)– the official currency of Azerbaijan– equaling Rs 50.28, or Rs 100 equal to just AZN 1.99.

However, given that Azerbaijan is a tiny nation with a population of around 1.02 crores (roughly the size on an Indian city), its “stronger” currency is in no way indicative of its economic status in the world, especially when compared to a large economy like India.

India reassesses deals made with Turkish firms

Meanwhile, the recent stance of Turkey and Azerbaijan in the India-Pakistan conflict has forced New Delhi to rethink its future engagements with Ankara on various matters, including trade and diplomatic ties. According to a media report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government is re-assessing deals signed with Turkish companies in sectors ranging from automobile to IT, metro rail to tunnels.
