Custom UPI ID: The United Payments Interface or UPI, has emerged as the preferred mode of payment for millions of Indians over the last decade, but users have often expressed their dissatisfaction with randomly-generated UPI IDs on UPI apps, because of privacy concerns as the ID usually contains the user’s linked phone number.
However, Paytm, one of India’s largest digital payments’ platforms, recently introduced a new feature that allows users to create a unique UPI ID of their choosing.
Initially, the feature was only supported by Yes Bank and Axis Bank, but now other top banks like HDFC Bank and SBI have also integrated the facility, allowing their users more control of their privacy.
While the feature is currently only available with Paytm, reports suggests that other major payments’ apps like Amazon Pay, Google Pay and PhonePe are also working to implement the feature in upcoming updates.
Currently, custom UPI ID feature is only available on the Paytm app, on both Android and iOS platforms.
The custom UPI ID feature is designed to enhance user privacy by replacing the linked phone number or email ID in the system-generated UPI ID with a custom alphanumeric text followed by user’s bank name. The feature secures users private details like phone number and email ID with a unique digital identity which prevents cyber scams, online harassment and stalking, Paytm said in release when it launched the feature earlier this months
A personalized UPI ID also makes digital transactions even more secure, it added.
